It’s my son’s fifth birthday. Every birthday seems big. This one seems huge! Five is going from a baby to a boy. I am trying to breathe in the moments of goofy and lovable self. Instead of being sad I am being thankful for fun he brings to my life and looking forward to him growing into his own little space in this world, making connections with other people and finding things he loves.
Letter to my Son
Dear Lukas,
You have filled our house with silliness and laughter. You are generous with your time for his family and your love. You’re quick to choose joy and kindness over anger. I am incredibly proud of you for that. I know you currently want to be a Kung Fu Master, but truly you can do anything you set your mind too. I already see it. I already see your love for this big world in your love of space and geography.
This year you started kindergarten and it’s incredible to see you grow in every way. This is the first step of you reaching new heights as a kid, a teenager, then young adult, then man, but through each stage you will always be my son.
I hope you will cherish the family you grow one day like you cherish me, your father and your sisters even at this young age. You complete us more than you’ll ever know.
