On a beautiful Fall day I was honored to have a family portrait session at sunset with this full family of six at the El Dorado Dry Lake Bed in Las Vegas. There are so many easy jokes we can make about having a big family, but truthfully I think there are only good things. More love, more smiles and more fun! Mike and Sara never planned out having four kids, in fact at one point they felt at peace if they never had kids. Luckily they were blessed with the family they currently have, because their hearts seemed truly full.

With Six our Hearts are Full

I loved the dynamic of  Mike and  Sara! I laughed when they told me Sara originally wanted to elope, but it was actually Mike who was “groomzilla” and insisted on a full wedding experience—from a Catholic ceremony to a sit-down reception. Their family portraits were a great remembrance of how the two of them has grown and how their lives have added so much more love to their everyday lives.While Sara and Mike are parenting pros with their three girls, they recently added their first boy to the family almost a year ago. Since the addition Sara says, “It’s been a bit chaotic! I keep hoping we’ll finally get into a routine, but each day seems to bring new challenges. I think I have to let go of the idea of a set routine!” Sara adds that through the business she loves the new normal. “Patrick is very sweet. We are lucky he goes with the flow, since we’re busy getting the girls to and from school and activities. The girls adore him. They love to sing to him, play with him and help entertain him in any way they can. It has been fun to see how maternal they are with him, particularly Claudia.” I think every parent can relate when she describes the special moments being, “the everyday moments when they are playing together peacefully or when we’re reading to them.”

Because their favorite moments with their family are those that happen amongst the mundane, Sara’s favorite photos of her family are the ones that were just taken in the moment – the kids swimming, playing, exploring, etc. Although she admits it’s difficult to do anything with the pictures on her phone. Getting photos done around the holidays, on trips and other special events to be framed or put in an album become incredibly cherished.

Why I became a Family Portrait Photographer

As you add each child into your family it’s hard to imagine what life was like before they were in it. “Babies and kids grow so fast, and we’ve really enjoyed looking back on photos from months and years past to see how everyone has changed. Also, my husband is more into photos than anyone I know. I like to say pictures are his ‘love language.’” Then Sara said the magic words. “Taking family photos is a very worthwhile investment of time and money. We treasure all of the memories were able to capture via photos.”Sara attributes her new superpower to her new mindset, reminding herself “that kids are just little people, so I look at situations and dilemmas through their eyes. I think to myself whether I would want to be my kid.” Sara reminded me of one of the greatest quotes I wish I could remember more often, “This too shall pass” (for better or for worse!).” This was only the ENTIRE reason I became a family portrait photographer. I am so thankful that Sara and I can relate on cherishing these beautiful moments of being a mother, because as a result we were able to create amazing photos and fun memories for her family!
